Understanding Headaches and Migraines

Headaches typically get their start, not in the head, but in the neck -- especially, via tension in tiny muscles such as the RCPM (rectus capitis posterior minor) muscle. These muscles are attached to pain-sensitive membranes encircling the brain, and when they go into spasm, they pull painfully on those membranes. The result is a cervicogenic headache, more commonly known as a tension headache. You may experience these headaches in the wake of a whiplash injury, or as the result of longstanding cervical misalignment that keeps your neck muscles under constant strain.

The reason for chronic migraine attacks is less clear, although biochemical imbalances and sudden cranial blood pressure changes are most likely part of the process. Your migraines may be set off by any of a bewildering variety of stimuli, from foods or atmospheric changes to flashing lights or the shadows created by spinning ceiling fans. Migraines can assault with a similarly diverse range of symptoms, from visual aberrations and nausea to light sensitivity, lightheadedness, and an especially intense headache. This onslaught may go on for up to 72 hours.

Corrective Care From Our Chiropractor

Drugs are a less-than-ideal answer to chronic headache and migraine issues. Their actual effectiveness may be limited, and by the time you know to take them, you're already suffering. Most importantly, they can't treat the underlying cause of your symptoms. Our chiropractor, Dr. Modaresi, can spot the musculoskeletal imbalances that may be triggering your tension headaches. Cervical chiropractic adjustments can normalize the head's balance on the spine, de-stressing the neck muscles so they won't go into spasm. Other natural techniques such as massage therapy may also help keep tension out of your neck. If migraines are your problem, you'll be happy to know that chiropractic adjustment has been shown to reduce both the intensity and the frequency of these attacks.
